DIY bed bug treatment
If you have a confirmed bed bug infestation, these steps can reduce the problem.
- Clean bedding, linens, curtains, and clothing in very hot water.
- It is also advisable to vacuum your mattress after scrubbing the seams with a stiff brush.
Beware! Although it is possible to to get rid of bed bugs by yourself we highly recommend seeking professional treatment. This is because if you miss any bed bugs or eggs during your cleaning the problem might reoccur. In addition to this, cleaning can disturb ‘safe areas’ where the bed bugs have been living. This might encourage them to spread throughout your home or business.
Professional bed bug eradication
Our Edinburgh pest control team offer a full inspection service for bed bugs. Our team will thoroughly inspect your furniture and carpets, and take a full description of the symptoms you have noticed. To monitor your property we can instal bedbug monitor boards. These are discreet glue boards which can be positioned near your bed to attract and trap bed bugs if they venture towards your bed.
If it turns out that you do have a bed bug infestation, we recommend using a professional Heat Treatment, which is by far the safest and most effective method of getting rid of bedbugs. We also have insecticide treatment available to quickly kill off all adults and eggs.
Bed Bug Heat Treatment
Bed bug heat treatment is a chemical-free method of getting rid of bedbugs. Using heat to kill bed bugs is much quicker, safer, and generally more effective than using insecticide chemicals.
50ºC – 52ºC are the temperatures that kill bed bugs. It’s important to achieve this temperature throughout the entire room, including heating up solid surfaces such as walls and floors. It takes 1-2 hours to physically dry out the bed bugs, which then die due to the cells in their bodies ceasing to function.
This requires a lot of energy and specialist equipment. It’s not something you can do yourself by turning your radiators up full, or warming your bed up with a fan heater. It’s also important to check the room for cold spots during the treatment.
Using heat to kill bed bugs is a precise operation, so please don’t be fooled by unscrupulous companies who promise to do the job on the cheap. It’s highly likely that they will be using inadequate equipment, such as plug-in fan heaters. Therefore you may well end up having to repeat the process properly.
